The Josh Palmer Fund was established in 1999 after Josh Palmer was diagnosed with late-stage Hodgkin’s disease. What began as one family’s experience with cancer quickly became a broader mission to support others facing the same challenges across the Twin Tiers.
Through that experience, the Palmer family saw firsthand that cancer affects far more than a diagnosis. In addition to the physical toll, families often face major financial and emotional strain. Travel costs, utility bills, groceries, lodging, and other daily expenses can become overwhelming during treatment. The Fund was created to help meet those needs in a direct and meaningful way.
Since its beginning, the Josh Palmer Fund has grown through the support of local families, businesses, schools, and volunteers. Its events bring the community together not only to raise funds, but to provide real help for individuals and families navigating cancer.
The Fund also works closely with WINK (Women in Pink), an organization founded by local women to support others facing breast cancer. That partnership reflects a shared commitment to making sure support is available quickly and locally when it is needed most.
In addition to patient assistance, the Josh Palmer Fund invests in the future through scholarships for graduating student-athletes throughout the region. Each year, up to $5,000 is awarded to students who demonstrate strong character, leadership, and commitment in their schools and communities.

The Josh Palmer Fund exists to provide financial support and practical assistance to local individuals and families affected by cancer.
Its mission is rooted in community action. Throughout the year, the Fund organizes several signature events that have become staples in the region. These include one of the premier high school basketball tournaments on the East Coast, held each year in Elmira, New York, at the end of December just before the New Year. The Fund also hosts its Annual Golf Tournament each fall, the 100 Inning Baseball Game each spring, the WINK Gala in the fall, and the Pigskin Classic in the fall in partnership with Mansfield and Cornell University.
These events do more than bring people together. They raise the funds that help families manage the everyday costs that often come with a cancer diagnosis, including travel, lodging, household bills, meals, and other essential needs during treatment.
Partnerships with organizations such as Falck Cancer Center, Guthrie Cancer Center, Care First (Hospice), and Bampa’s House in Corning help extend that impact across the community. Through those partnerships, along with direct patient assistance, the Josh Palmer Fund has provided nearly $2 million in financial support to local individuals and families.
At its core, the Josh Palmer Fund is about local people helping local people. It exists to ensure that families facing cancer have practical help, reliable resources, and a community behind them every step of the way. No one should ever fight cancer alone.
